BPC-157: What We Know, and Why It Is Not a Supplement
A peptide with encouraging animal data, almost no human trials, and a specific regulatory status that most sellers do not mention.
BPC-157 occupies a strange position. It is one of the most discussed compounds in recovery circles, it is sold widely online, and the human evidence for it is close to nonexistent. Both of those things are true at the same time, and the marketing depends on you not noticing.
What it is
BPC-157 is a synthetic 15-amino-acid peptide, a fragment derived from a protein found in human gastric juice. In animal models it has been studied for tendon, ligament, muscle and gut healing, and the results in rodents have been genuinely encouraging — accelerated tendon-to-bone healing, improved gut mucosal repair, effects on angiogenesis.
That animal literature is why people are interested, and it is a reasonable reason to be interested.
Where the evidence stops
There are essentially no published, peer-reviewed, placebo-controlled human efficacy trials for the uses it is sold for. Not "few." Not "small." The human trial base for tendon healing, injury recovery or gut repair in people is not there.
This is the entire story, and it is why claims about what BPC-157 does in humans are extrapolations from rats. Rodent healing studies translate to humans inconsistently at best.
Long-term human safety data is equally absent. That is a separate problem from efficacy: an unstudied compound is not a safe compound, it is an unknown one. The angiogenic mechanism that makes it interesting for healing is the same mechanism that makes the absence of long-term data worth taking seriously.
The regulatory status sellers skip
In 2023 the FDA placed BPC-157 in Category 2 of its bulk-drug-substances list for compounding — substances with significant safety risks — which effectively removed it from legitimate compounding pharmacies. It is not an approved drug and not a lawful dietary supplement.
It is also prohibited at all times by the World Anti-Doping Agency. Any tested athlete taking it is risking a ban.
So the product sold to you exists in a gap: not a medicine, not a supplement, mostly sold as "research use only, not for human consumption" — a label that exists specifically to move legal liability onto you.
What people use instead
If the goal is tendon or soft-tissue recovery, the boring interventions are the ones with human evidence: progressive loading — tendons respond to graded mechanical stress and this is the best-supported approach there is — plus adequate protein, sleep, and time. None of that is exciting and all of it is better established.
The honest position
BPC-157 is a legitimately interesting research compound. It is also unapproved, unlawful to sell as a supplement, banned in sport, unstudied in humans for the things it is sold for, and distributed through channels with no quality control.
You may still decide to use it. Just do it knowing that is the actual state of the evidence rather than the version on the sales page — and see peptide safety and sourcing first.
