How to Read a Supplement Label

Six checks, in order. Most products fail one of the first three, which means you can stop reading and put the bottle down.

A supplement label is a legal document pretending to be marketing. Once you know the order to read it in, judging a product takes about ninety seconds.

Work through these in sequence. If a product fails an early check, the later ones do not matter.

1. Find the serving size first, not the ingredient list

Every amount on the panel is per serving, and the serving is whatever the manufacturer decided it should be. A label boasting "5 g of L-citrulline" at a serving size of two scoops is a 2.5 g product if you use one scoop.

Then check servings per container against the price. A 30-serving tub at $45 is $1.50 a day. A 20-serving tub at $40 is $2.00 a day. The larger tub is often the cheaper product per day, and the front of the package will not tell you that.

2. Check for a proprietary blend

A proprietary blend lists several ingredients with a single combined weight:

Performance Matrix (2,400 mg): L-citrulline, beetroot extract, L-arginine, ginseng, black pepper extract

That tells you nothing. The blend could be 2,300 mg of the cheapest ingredient and 25 mg of each of the rest. Blends are legal, and manufacturers are permitted to hide the breakdown as a trade secret.

Treat any proprietary blend as a disclosure failure. Not because the product is necessarily bad, but because the manufacturer has chosen to make it unjudgeable, and you should not spend money on something you cannot evaluate. If a formula were well dosed, disclosing the amounts would be a selling point.

3. Compare the label dose to the studied dose

This is the check that eliminates most of the shelf.

For each headline ingredient, find the dose used in human research and compare. Citrulline studies use 3–6 g; a product with 500 mg is under a tenth of that. Ashwagandha trials mostly use 300–600 mg of a standardized root extract. Curcumin, magnesium, creatine, L-theanine — all have well-established research ranges.

The gap between "contains ingredient X" and "contains enough of ingredient X to do what the studies on X showed" is where most of this industry lives. A trace amount included so it can appear on the label is sometimes called fairy dusting, and it is extremely common.

4. Check the form, not just the name

The same ingredient name can mean very different products.

A standardization percentage is a good sign: "Panax ginseng extract, standardized to 7% ginsenosides" tells you the active fraction. "Ginseng, 300 mg" does not.

5. Look for third-party testing

The FDA does not approve dietary supplements before sale. It can act after the fact, but nobody checks the bottle before it ships. Independent verification is voluntary, which makes it meaningful when present.

Look for NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Sport, or USP Verified — these test the finished product against its label. "Made in a cGMP-certified facility" is weaker: it describes manufacturing process controls, not verification that the contents match the label. "Made in the USA" says nothing about what is inside.

6. Now, and only now, read the claims

By this point you already know whether the product can plausibly do anything. Claims are the last thing to read, and there are two tells worth knowing.

The structure/function claim — "supports healthy blood flow," "helps maintain normal testosterone levels" — is what supplements are legally allowed to say. It always carries the FDA disclaimer nearby: not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

If a supplement claims to treat, cure or prevent a condition, it is making a drug claim it is not entitled to make. That is a reason to distrust everything else on the package.

The ninety-second version

  1. Serving size, servings per container, cost per day.
  2. Any proprietary blend? Put it down.
  3. Headline doses versus studied doses.
  4. Ingredient forms and standardization.
  5. Third-party seal?
  6. Claims last.
